About

Alan is a fully qualified bookkeeper and a Member of The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers, which is one of the largest bookkeeping institutes in the world.

He has spent over 30 years in a variety of accounting roles, within the electricity industry and so has extensive experience of bookkeeping and accounting principles and work.  Prior to leaving the electricity industry in May 2007 to set up his bookkeeping practice, he studied and passed with distinctions the various bookkeeping examinations of The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers, to enable him to become a Member of the Institute. In addition, he studied for and was awarded the Diploma in Payroll Management, to enable him to carry out and manage payroll work for his clients. Since then, he has taken further examinations with the Institute, as they have restructured their membership requirements and has again obtained distinctions in their manual bookkeeping examinations as well. He is currently studying for their Level III Diploma in Self-Assessment Tax Returns Completion, so that he can provide these services in future as well.

Company History

When Alan started his bookkeeping practice in March 2007 he felt that the name Alan Thomas Bookkeeping Services emphasised the personal bookkeeping service which Alan could offer to local businesses in the North Somerset and Bristol areas.

Over the 9 years the practice has operated, he has worked with a variety of clients across all business structures including Sole Traders, Partnerships, Limited Companies and Registered Charities. These businesses are across a variety of business sectors such as retail, farming, engineering, construction, care homes, charities, catering and many more. Thus, Alan has gained a unique understanding of the needs of the small business community and of the service he provides through his practice, to help them maintain proper accounting records and provide them with regular management accounting reports.

However, with the move to a cloud based approach to accounting, Alan felt that a new name was needed, to reflect the changing environment. So, the practice was renamed as AT Accounting Solutions, as providing businesses with solutions to their accounting issues and problems was going to be a key part of the practices offering to the small business community for the 21st Century.

Although the practice still provides all the usual bookkeeping & payroll services a business needs, with the use of cloud based technology, greater improvements in efficiency can be achieved. Also, helping business transition from the current situation to meet their new obligations with RTI, Making Tax Digital, & Automatic Enrolment for Work Place Pensions, will be critical to the success of small businesses in the future.
